Our signature Bird Friendly® coffee hails from the Huehuetenango region of Guatemala. Asobagri, the organic farm that produces these beans, helps to protect hundreds of bird species on their shaded coffee farms. This coffee protects birds like the long-tailed manakin, resplendent quetzal, pink-headed warbler, and the whiskered screech-owl.

Farm: AOBAGRI Farms

Processing Method: Washed

Tasting Notes: Bakers chocolate, dried fig, caramel, and walnut.

Elevation: 1000-1600m

Certifications: USDA Organic, Smithsonian Bird Friendly®

Feature Species: Resplendent Quetzal Pharomachrus mocinno

The Resplendent Quetzal (Pharomachrus mocinno) is one of the most iconic birds of Central America, with iridescent emerald plumage and long streaming tail feathers that have made it a national symbol of Guatemala for centuries. The bird appears on the country’s flag and coat of arms and even lends its name to the Guatemalan currency, reflecting its deep cultural significance as a symbol of freedom and natural beauty. Ecologically, quetzals rely on mature high elevation forests where fruiting trees, especially wild avocados, support their seasonal movements. The shade grown coffee landscapes managed by ASOBAGRI farmers in the Guatemalan highlands help maintain this forest structure, sustaining habitat for quetzals and many other cloud forest species. Protecting the places where quetzals still thrive also protects the cultural and ecological heritage that defines these mountains and the people who live there.
