Big Year Coffee is partnering with the Dario Delgado family at La Cabaña, a 136-acre estate in Colombia’s Sierra Nevada, for a limited release. Since 1998, La Cabaña has been a model of sustainability, maintaining organic certification and, notably, Smithsonian Bird Friendly certification. This certification ensures the farm preserves bird habitats by maintaining a diverse canopy of native trees like guamo and carbonero.
La Cabaña uses Bird Friendly® and organic practices such as composting coffee pulp and manure for fertilizer. Coffee cherries are carefully hand-picked and processed on-site before being dried to precise moisture levels. The estate’s dry mill in Santa Marta ensures full traceability. By sourcing from La Cabaña, Big Year Coffee supports conservation efforts that protect ecosystems for birds while delivering high-quality coffee.

The Santa Marta Antbird is a rare, endemic, forest-dwelling bird found only in the dense understory of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Colombia. Endemic to this unique mountain range, it plays an important role in the ecosystem by helping control insect populations and maintaining healthy undergrowth. For local communities, this species embodies the region’s natural heritage and reminds us that the forests where our coffee is grown are more than just terrain, they’re living, thriving systems that nurture birds, trees and people alike.
