UCA San Juan del Río Coco is a farmer cooperative in northern Nicaragua made up of more than 370 small scale producers. Their coffee is grown in mixed shade forests that also provide habitat for migratory and resident birds. The farms follow Bird Friendly standards that maintain canopy cover, native trees, and organic practices. This coffee reflects a landscape where farming and healthy bird communities still coexist.

The Long tailed Manakin is a small, brilliantly colored bird found in the tropical forests of Central America, including the shaded coffee landscapes of northern Nicaragua. Known for its elaborate courtship displays where males dance together in perfectly timed duets, it brings a burst of energy and color to the forest understory. As a fruit eating species, the Long tailed Manakin plays an important role in seed dispersal, helping maintain the healthy forest structure that birds and coffee farms rely on. Its presence reminds us that when coffee is grown under a diverse canopy, wildlife and people both benefit.
