Feature Species: Yellow tufted Woodpecker Melanerpes cruentatus

The Yellow tufted Woodpecker is a charismatic and highly social species found in the tropical forests of northern Peru, including the shade grown coffee regions where CECANOR producers farm. Like many woodpeckers, it plays a critical ecological role as an ecosystem engineer. By excavating cavities for nesting and roosting, Yellow tufted Woodpeckers create essential habitat for many other species that cannot build their own, including small owls, hummingbirds, bats, and insects. Their foraging also helps control wood boring insect populations and promotes nutrient cycling within forest trees. Woodpeckers are often indicators of healthy forest structure, so their presence reflects landscapes where trees and wildlife remain an integrated part of coffee farming systems.
